Maintenance and Grounds Worker

Reports to: Maintenance Manager.

Elysian’s sites are farms as well as education provisions. Buildings, fencing, gates, drains, grounds, vehicles and equipment all need to be safe and working properly, because young people and animals depend on them every day. This role keeps that true.

You will cover the practical upkeep of the sites: general building and site repairs, significant fencing work, painting and decorating, tiling, glazing, drainage, routine checks on household and farm equipment, and moving and setting up equipment as needed. You will use pressure jetting machines, generators and portable tools, and drive tractors, diggers and other vehicles for general farm work. No two days are the same and the work changes with the weather and the season.

Part of the role involves working alongside young people on work experience placements, and alongside volunteers, supporting them to take part safely and well. That matters as much as the maintenance itself. Many of the young people at Elysian have found other settings difficult, and someone who is friendly, patient and steady around them makes a real difference.

You will need to work on your own initiative, judge what a job needs, order or calculate materials, keep proper records, and tell the Maintenance Manager promptly when something is beyond what you can put right on the day. You may be asked to attend emergency call-outs outside normal hours where you are available.
